Male median raphe cysts: serial retrospective analysis and histopathological classification

چکیده
BACKGROUND To review the clinical and pathological characteristics of median raphe cysts and to classify the lesions according to pathogenesis and histopathological findings. METHODS The medical records of patients who were diagnosed with median raphe cysts between 2001 and 2010 were reviewed to document the clinical presentation and pathological findings of the cysts. RESULTS Most patients were asymptomatic; however, 9 patients had inflammatory or infectious cysts that were tender or painful. Four patients who had cysts on the parameatus and distal prepuce had difficulty voiding. Hematuria and hematospermia were noted in 2 cases. Thirty-one cysts were lined with an urothelium-like epithelium, and a squamous epithelium lining was found in 3 cases. In 2 cases, a well-formed mucinous glandular structure was observed. The other 20 cysts consisted of mixed epithelia. After excision of the cysts under local or general anesthesia, an urethral fistula developed as a complication in only 1 case. CONCLUSIONS Median raphe cysts are benign lesions formed due to tissue trapping during the development of urethral folds. The cysts can be defined into 4 types based on pathological findings: urethral, epidermoid, glandular, and mixed. The associated symptoms and signs should be taken into consideration when determining the treatment for the cysts. Median raphe cyst with ciliated cells of the penis.
Sir, Median raphe cysts of the penis are uncommon benign lesions that affect young men. The cysts are lined with pseudostratified columnar or stratified squamous cell epithelium, mimicking the epithelial lining of the male urethra. Immunohistochemical study also indicates a histogenetic relationship with the urothelium. To our knowledge, there have been only 2 reports of ciliated epithelium in ...
متن کاملCongenital median raphe cysts: Coexistence of cystic lesions and canal-like lesions
Median raphe cyst of the perineum is a rare congenital anomaly and was first reported in 1895. We report a 9-year-old male with median raphe cysts in the perineum which had become swollen and then spontaneously ruptured several times since he was 3 years old. There were two separate lesions; one was a cystic lesion and the other was a canal-like lesion. They were completely excised and the inne...
متن کاملCLINICAL REPORT Pigmented Median Raphe Cysts of the Penis
A 4-year-old Japanese boy presented with cystic lesions on the ventral midline of the penis from birth. Examination of his genitalia revealed multilobulated, freely mobile, cystic papules, 2 ± 4 mm in diameter, on the ventral surface of the penis from the frenulum to the anus. These cysts were translucent and brown ± black in color (Fig. 1). One large cystic lesion was surgically removed for hi...

Median raphe cysts present anywhere between the external urethral meatus and the anus. The cysts can occur at parameatus, glans penis, penile shaft, scrotum, or perineum. Perianal region is an extremely rare location for these lesions. Here we present a 50-year-old male patient who presented with a cystic, fluctuant lesion, located at 12 o'clock in perianal region. Microscopic examination revea...
